SUMMER YOUTH OPERA CAMP

We are very proud of our Opera Unlimited Summer Youth Opera Camp. The camp provides an enriching experience for children that is fun and rewarding. Many of our students return time and again and say that the camp is the highlight of their year. A large number of our students have gone on to major in music in college and to careers in music. Several of them credit our camp with inspiring them to pursue their music careers.

Our 18th Opera Unlimited Summer Youth Opera Camp will culminate in a fully-staged production Gilbert and Sullivan's Patience. Aficionados consider Patience to be one of their favorite G&S operettas (Russ Sype, who spoke to the camp last July, is one of these). Patience is a satire of the poetic snobs and it attacks pretentiousness of all kinds; while it was aimed at the English aesthetic movement of the 1870s, it remains relevant today. There are 5 male and 5 female leads and rousing songs for the chorus. It is very funny, and the music is wonderful. We have abridged the score especially for Opera Unlimited. Loretta Robinson will return as Music Director, and Natalia Tikhovidova will be our pianist.

Over the years, we have worked to keep our expenses low. The camp runs at a loss and we use some of our own personal money to make up the difference: it's worth it to see the joy on the kids' faces when the production comes together. Nevertheless, the steadily increasing cost for renting the Highland High School Performing Arts Center is forcing us to reluctantly increase camp tuition. Tuition for 2018 will be $100 per student; this remains incredibly inexpensive compared with other summer activities. Families with more than one child in camp will receive a 10% discount for each child. We will also offer a $10 rebate to any family that refers a new student who attends our camp.

We are very sorry to have to increase the cost of camp - this is our first increase since 2010. Note that in 2010 we paid $800 to rent the Highland High School Performing Arts Center for 5 weeks; last year our cost was over $3000 for 3 weeks. We will continue to offer scholarships to students who need them: if anyone would like to fund a scholarship or otherwise help support the summer opera camp, it would be gratefully appreciated (and it is a tax-deductible donation). OU's Opera Camp remains the least expensive high-quality camp experience in town. Voice lessons alone cost at least $25/half-hour.

We will meet on May 5th and 6th from 1-4 PM at the First Unitarian Church 3701 Carlisle Blvd NW, ABQ to hear the kids sing: there will be an accompanist. You need only come to one of these meetings; please come with your tuition payment. The camp will run weekdays from June 5th through July 6th, (1-4 PM) and performances will by July 6th and July 7th.
